Challenge for Russian film school students

Craft in Focus

The Craft in Focus international festival of films on crafts will take place in Zaandam from 18 to 19 May 2013. The film festival is organized by the Windy Miller Foundation.

Craft in Focus offers inspirational documentary films on crafts and craftsmanship from across the globe, as well as thought-provoking lectures by interesting guest speakers, a Russian student film competition, and an in-depth filmmaking workshop on local crafts. Since in 2013 The Netherlands celebrates its long-lasting relationship with Russia, there is a special program of films on Russian crafts.

Challenge
We hereby invite Russian Film School students to create and submit a short documentary on a local craft. For example films on wood carving, matryoshka sculpting, kerchiefs and scarves production, et cetera. We are interested in films that portray craftsmen, show their bodily knowledge, deal with traditional craftsmanship in an ever more automated world, problems with succession, vanishing of knowledge, passion of real craftsmen (and women!) et cetera.

The winner
We will select several films for screening at the festival and invite one filmmaker to attend the festival in person. The film of the winner will be shown during the festival and the filmmaker will be invited for a short presentation and Q&A after screening. We will pay for the winner’s travel costs and hotel accommodation during the festival.

Extended submission deadline: April 1, 2013, film length no longer than 30 minutes, format: 16:9, HD or HDV. Screener on PAL region free DVD.

Please send the registration form and DVD screener no later than April 1, 2013 to:
